隨著我國各層次、各類型研究生教育的開展，英語教學中把一種教材用于所有研究生的做法已不能適應新的形勢。為了照顧不同類型不同層次的研究生學習英語的不同需求和特點，真正貫徹因材施教的教育思想，我們以專業碩士學位研究生和各類研究生課程班學生為主要目標讀者，編寫了這本教材，在課文長度、難度和練習形式上區別于全日制碩士研究生的教材。 作為研究生的英語教材，本書力求做到內容新穎，知識性思想性強，滲透對文化的學習、思考和探究，並能體現學術性。同時，語言首先是交際工具，非英語專業研究生掌握英語的目的是為了應用。因此本書還十分注重語言的實用性和選材的廣泛性、時代性。 本書以課文閱讀為核心，通過多樣化的練習，對學生進行語言知識(如詞匯、句型擴展及語法鞏固)和讀、說、寫、譯等語言技能的綜合訓練，提高學生的英語應用能力，從而達到學以致用的目的。
